چکیده

Recent advancements in wearable inertial sensor technology have enabled extensive research into activity classification. However, the distinction between the sitting and standing activities using trunk-worn wearable monitoring systems remains challenging, thus requiring additional sources of information such as elevation change. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of barometric pressure, an absolute estimate of elevation, for distinguishing between sitting and standing (STS), as part of a wearable system. A barometric pressure sensor was integrated in a comfortable, miniaturized wearable sensor device suitable for improved long-term activity recognition. It enabled discriminating STS transitions from stationary postures with an accuracy of 99.5%, sensitivity of 99.7% and specificity of 99.3% and is capable of completely discriminating Sit-to-Stand from Stand-to-Sit transitions.

Classification of daily-life postural transitions using trunk-worn wearable barometric pressure sensor

Distinguishing sedentary from dynamic behavior is essential in addressing disease conditions that are influenced by mobility. Event-based activity recognition algorithms essentially rely on accurate classification of siting and standing postural transitions to distinguish whether the subject is sitting or standing. In this paper, the use of barometric pressure, to estimate altitude, is investig...

Physical activity recognition using a single triaxial accelerometer and a barometric sensor for baby and child care in a home environment

In this paper, we describe and evaluate an activity recognition system using a single 3-axis accelerometer and a barometric sensor worn on a waist of the body. The purpose of this work is to prevent child accidents such as unintentional injuries at home. In order to prevent child accidents in the home and reduce efforts of parents, we present a new safety management system for babies and childr...

Activity classification based on inertial and barometric pressure sensors at different anatomical locations.

Miniature, wearable sensor modules are a promising technology to monitor activities of daily living (ADL) over extended periods of time. To assure both user compliance and meaningful results, the selection and placement site of sensors requires careful consideration. We investigated these aspects for the classification of 16 ADL in 6 healthy subjects under laboratory conditions using ReSense, o...
